4th Global Environment Facility Assembly
The 4th Global Environment Facility Assembly was attended by representatives from the 181 GEF member states. The Assembly was an event of strategic importance for the global environment, addressing financing for its protection and GEF policy decisions.
The proceedings were well received concerning the funds obtained to replenish the Facility. Satisfaction was also expressed by the African states on the changes made to the GEF statutes to designate the Facility as one of the financial mechanisms of the Convention against Desertification.
Side event: France and Uruguay on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in Uruguay
France and Uruguay's government co-organised a side event on biodiversity conservation and sustainable development in Uruguay. The FGEF, as the GEF’s bilateral sister organisation, has been supporting Uruguay's government since
The side event was held in the presence of Mme Graciela Muslera (Minister for Housing, Planning and the Environment), M. Tabaré Aguerre (Minister for Agriculture), M. Jean Christophe Potton (French ambassador to Uruguay) and M. Marc-Antoine Martin (FGEF secretary-general).
The event highlighted France's role in implementing the SNAP. The project is promoted by the Ministry for Ecology and is supporting two sites (Laguna de Rocha and Valle del Lunarejo) where priority is given to governance of protected areas involving private ownership.
Funding from the FGEF aims to promote and disseminate French know-how in this area through technical support from the French Regional Nature Parks Federation. >> To find out more on the GEF web site: Conservation of biodiversity and sustainable development in Uruguay: International cooperation in support of public policy (Uruguay Gov’t)
Visit to the Laguna de Rocha site
In parallel with the side event, the Uruguayan government organised a visit on 27 May 2010 to the “Laguna de Rocha” site, in which numerous delegations involved in the project took part, including the French Ministry for Ecology.
The visitors were able to meet the people involved in implementing the SNAP project. The aim was to learn about the process of implementing protected areas and contributions made by local initiatives receiving support from different international cooperation bodies. >> To find out more on the GEF web site: click here
