Signature of a financing agreement for the CILSS / Permanent Inter-state Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel

21/12/2010

On 21 December 2010, a financing agreement for the Regional Programme for Sustainable Land Management was signed by Professor Alhousseïni BRETAUDEAU, the Executive Secretary of the CILSS, His Excellency Emmanuel BETH, Ambassador for France to Burkina Faso and Patrice TRANCHANT, Director of the AFD in Burkina Faso representing the FGEF.

This 2 M€ grant from the FGEF, amounting to about 1.3 billion CFA Francs, is awarded under the Regional Programme for Sustainable Land Management (PRGDT) to be implemented by the CILSS with support from three technical and financial partners: the European Union (EU), the Canadian International Development Research Center (IDRC) and the FGEF, under this financing agreement.

The overall aim of the PRGDT is to create the political, strategic, technical and social conditions that will enable local players to choose, implement and manage sustainable land management activities designed to improve their livelihoods and reduce their vulnerability to climate change.

As one of the events for the International Year of Biodiversity, the National Research Agency (ANR) and the French Global Environment Facility (FGEF) jointly organised an afternoon symposium on 19 November for players involved in scientific research and sustainable development .

The event was organised to showcase a selection of emblematic projects for marine biodiversity preservation, which were presented by researchers, scientists and operators in the field.

The programme was organised around a series of three film clips and discussions:

Tara Oceans - a major scientific expedition to preserve marine life

Setting out in the spirit of the great expeditions, a team of internationally renowned scientists joined the "Tara Oceans" expedition, supported by the ANR, in 2009, to further understanding of the resilience of marine ecosystems, how they function and how plankton, the basis of the food chain and the planet’s largest carbon sink, is now under grave threat from climate change and pollution.

  • Two marine conservation projects: protecting coral reefs in the South Pacific and supporting the Small Mediterranean Islands Initiative

Through the ANR-funded Coral Reefs programme implemented under the Coral Reefs Initiative for the South Pacific (CRISP), which is financed by the FGEF, or its Small Mediterranean Islands Initiative, the FGEF is promoting sustainable natural resource management to protect marine ecosystems and the endemic species that depend on them. Scientific research makes an essential contribution to these projects by improving knowledge to support ecosystem management.

  • Amazing life forms around hydrothermal vents in the ocean depths
Hydrothermal vents are high-temperature volcanic zones emitting smoke and fluids on the ocean floor. These fluids contain a great many chemical compounds supporting innumerable micro-organisms that play an essential role in the food chain.
