Small-Scale Initiatives – a dedicated programme

01/05/2010

With the Small-Scale Initiatives (SSI) programme, the FGEF has created a financial tool dedicated to building capacities among the civil societies of French-speaking Africa to conduct practical projects addressing biodiversity conservation and climate change. From 205 to 2008, 55 French-speaking NGOs received support from the FGEF under the SSI, for which the French IUCN Committee conducts technical monitoring.

The “Sustainable Mauritius” programme (MID) is helping Mauritius to set up appropriate infrastructure and programmes for energy management, transport, waste, biomass, tourism and biodiversity. The 35 M€ “MID Fund” is a dedicated instrument set up in July 2008 to facilitate the implementation of this policy. The 3-year project is being supported by a 1 million € grant from the FGEF. Its priority objective is to strengthen the capacities of the member authorities and the “MID Fund” and to support the launch of operations on energy.

Introducing energy efficiency in public buildings in Afghanistan

01/04/2010

This publication reviews Afghan-French cooperation for an energy efficiency operation in public buildings in Afghanistan.
The project was launched in 2004 by the MAEE with the aim of introducing measures to improve energy efficiency and promote renewable energy use by the different aid, development and reconstruction programmes working in the health and education sectors.
This 13 million € project, including an FGEF contribution of 1.35 million €, was implemented in liaison with the Afghan authorities by the Afghan-based GERES and coordinated by the ADEME.

The project provided advisory support to the authorities and training for operators, and also forged numerous partnerships with cooperation agencies, programme leaders and non-governmental organisations.

Marine Protected Areas - Review of FGEF's cofinanced project experiences

Marine Protected Areas - Review of FGEF's cofinanced project experiences

This study is the result of an external thematic assessment commissioned by the FGEF from an independent consultancy. The points of view it expresses are those of the consultants and do not necessarily reflect those of the French Global Environment Facility. The assessment concerns a limited sample only of marine protected areas in the tropics, and seeks only to disseminate the lessons learned from project experiences as widely as possible. It therefore does not aim to offer an exhaustive state-of-the-art report or a set of rules for the establishment of marine protected areas.

The FGEF decided to use these projects as a basis to capitalise on the main lessons drawn after 10 years of experience in the topic area concerned, and to assess methods of intervention that produce positive impacts for marine biodiversity conservation and for the populations living in these zones.
