The objective of this initiative is to build collectively, on the basis of experiences that have proven their effectiveness, a solid argument on the interest and means of restoring mangroves in the world. The Initiative is currently focusing on 4 FFEM projects that have many common points and converging objectives, and that are being deployed in different regions of the world: in Asia, West Africa, Central America and the Indian Ocean.
Mangroves play a major role in mitigating and regulating the impacts of climate change: they are both a bulwark against violent storms and contribute to carbon sequestration and storage. It is also essential for sustaining local populations in the surrounding area, particularly as a habitat and nursery for species used for local economic development. The Mangroves Initiative considers the role of mangroves as a nature-based solution: through the restoration of the ecological functions of mangroves, the restoration of environmental conditions and uses favourable to their natural regeneration, ecological engineering, or "grey and green" solutions, which combine infrastructure and soft solutions.
For several years, the FFEM has supported projects to strengthen coastal resilience and adapt to climate change. Through the Mangroves Initiative, it wishes to develop exchanges of experience between projects for the protection and regeneration of mangrove coasts, to provide scientific and technological knowledge, and to capitalise on and enhance their achievements.
