The 185 member countries gathered for the GEF Assembly adopt two key agreements to protect biodiversity worldwide

Representatives from 185 countries gathered in Vancouver, Canada for the Seventh Assembly of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) from 22 to 26 August 2023. Marking a globally significant event, the Assembly provided an arena to assess progress on the 2030 goals aimed at ending pollution and biodiversity loss, combating climate change and promoting inclusive, locally-led conservation.

The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, celebrated annually on 9 August, provides an important opportunity to highlight the challenges facing these communities all over the world. With an estimated population of between 370 and 500 million, indigenous peoples make up over half of the world’s cultural diversity and play a crucial role in ecosystem preservation, particularly in the Amazon region.

The FFEM presents its latest capitalisations: overviews of nature in a Latin American city, and the forests of Central Africa

At a round table organised on 13 June in Paris, the FFEM revealed its latest capitalisations highlighting two key themes: nature in a Latin American city and the sustainable management of Central African forests. With around a hundred participants attending the event on site and remotely, the event showcased the results of work by the FFEM and its partners. This discussion platform was the perfect opportunity for existing knowledge to be refined, sustainable solutions to be put forward and concepts for new initiatives to be kindled.

Working towards a Global Plastics Treaty: showcasing FFEM-supported projects for sustainable management of plastics

From 29 May to 2 June 2023, Paris is hosting the second session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC), which is aiming to develop an international legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution. This meeting, referred to as INC-2, represents a crucial step in global efforts to tackle the problem. In line with its strategy focused on circular solutions and pollution control, the FFEM is playing a key role by actively supporting innovative projects promoting a sustainable circular model that includes practical steps to reduce plastic pollution at source. Here is a recap on three of these projects.
