Carbon finance is essentially a way of assigning a value to the climate impact of actions on the ground. Carbon finance mechanisms were introduced through the Kyoto Protocol. They allow developed countries to offset their surplus greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by funding GHG reduction or carbon storage projects in countries of the “Global South”. Alongside this regulated market created through the Kyoto Protocol, a voluntary carbon market has emerged, which is open to any type of organisation. Although the carbon markets have been quite sluggish for a number of years, the 2021 Glasgow climate conference (COP26) and its negotiations on Article 6 of the Paris Agreement have led to a resurgence in interest.

Thursday 30th November marked the start of the 28th UN Conference of the Parties on climate change in Dubai - an opportunity to review FFEM-supported projects and its integrated strategy for tackling current and future environmental challenges.

At a round table organised on 13 June in Paris, the FFEM revealed its latest capitalisations highlighting two key themes: nature in a Latin American city and the sustainable management of Central African forests. With around a hundred participants attending the event on site and remotely, the event showcased the results of work by the FFEM and its partners. This discussion platform was the perfect opportunity for existing knowledge to be refined, sustainable solutions to be put forward and concepts for new initiatives to be kindled.
