From 29 May to 2 June 2023, Paris is hosting the second session of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC), which is aiming to develop an international legally binding instrument to end plastic pollution. This meeting, referred to as INC-2, represents a crucial step in global efforts to tackle the problem. In line with its strategy focused on circular solutions and pollution control, the FFEM is playing a key role by actively supporting innovative projects promoting a sustainable circular model that includes practical steps to reduce plastic pollution at source. Here is a recap on three of these projects.

Today, forestry management faces multiple challenges in terms of adapting to climate change, biodiversity preservation and sustainable forestry exploitation. If the development plan is the primary answer for sustainable management of the forests, the countries of Central Africa face a major challenge: renewal of stocks of the species exploited. For Jean-Louis Doucet, Professor at Gembloux Agro-Bio Tech and Sylvie Gourlet-Fleury, researcher at Cirad, reinforcing the sustainability of exploitation as part of forestry development is essential. On World Forest Day, they tell us about their work as part of the DynAfFor and P3FAC projects, supported by the FFEM, and their resulting recommendations for better management of the Central African forests.

Supporting the gradual phasing-out of mercury in the Guianas
Small-scale gold mining is the greatest contributing factor in environmental destruction in the Guianas, and is responsible for 37% of global mercury emissions. To protect humans and the environment against this pollutant, the FFEM is supporting the WWF France project to eliminate mercury from the gold sector in the Guianas by 2025.

Education on climate change
