Village Infrastructure Angels (VIA) and its international partners are helping villages in rural areas access infrastructure to reduce poverty and improve their standard of living, by offering them economic opportunities.

Context

The project provides access to solar energy in Vanuatu and Indonesia and meets the needs of households in terms of lighting, and recharging mobile phone batteries and other electrical consumer products.

It introduces innovative solar technologies to treat local agricultural crops:

  • Rice hullers;
  • Mills to produce maize flour, cassava or grind spices;
  • Rasps for coconuts and cassava;
  • Presses to extract oil;
  • Milling machines.

The grain mill project submitted by VIA is part of the more extensive Powering Agriculture program supported by USAID.

Description

The project will take place in 5 phases

  • Mapping of the project area and prioritization: finalize the choice of the priority sectors of the project in Vanuatu and Indonesia, with the participation of local partners.
  • Ordering of equipment to meet the needs of villages: finalize the list of equipment necessary for villages, organize demonstration sessions for the equipment, collect data on the types of agricultural crops produced, validate the needs of villagers.
  • Launch of the manufacturing of equipment by suppliers in China: manufacture the solar equipment and infrastructure for the project, send them to Indonesia and Vanuatu and deliver them ready to be installed.
  • Transshipment to the islands and training: install all the solar equipment in the target villages and train village entrepreneurs.
  • Disseminate results: share the knowledge acquired during the project at local and international level.

Impacts
  • Environmental: 750 tons of CO2 saved every year, i.e. 3,750 tons over 5 years.
  • Socioeconomic:
     Identification and  mobilization of communities (often small local NGOs);
    Supply and installation of 130 solar facilities and creation of some 130 local direct jobs;
     Strengthening of local industry and governments in the countries concerned.
