This trust fund specialises in providing funding to protect marine biodiversity. It was created in 2015 to improve the effectiveness of marine protected area management in the Mediterranean. The income generated by financial investments is used to provide grants to NGOs and marine area management authorities in different countries. Faced with significant pressure on ecosystems in the Mediterranean, this environmental fund has already enabled the sustainable financing of eight marine protected areas in four countries and the preservation of the fragile ecosystems found there. The FFEM has been financing MedFund since its creation in 2018.
The support provided to MedFund by FFEM and AFD was also cited as exemplary by Prince Albert II of Monaco at the One Planet Summit held on 11 January in Paris.
