THE WEEECAM PROJECT, CO-FUNDED BY THE FFEM, IS NOMINATED FOR THE 2018 CONVERGENCES AWARD
Published on
At the 2018 Convergences Forum, the WEEECAM project was nominated for the Convergences Award, which since 2011 has recognized projects by social, public, and private partners committed to a fair and sustainable future and a world of “Zero Exclusion, Zero Carbon, Zero Poverty.” These projects must demonstrate a strong social and/or environmental impact and be innovative and replicable.
Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) poses a twofold problem: rapid growth (more than 4% per year) and a significant impact on the environment and human health due to the presence of heavy metals (lead, mercury), persistent organic pollutants (PCBs, PBDEs), and greenhouse gases (HCFCs, HFCs)… As such, it is considered particularly hazardous waste and is regulated by several international conventions.
The WEEECAM project, funded by the FFEM and led by the NGO La Guilde Européenne du Raid (GER)—a partner of Solidarité Technologique—aims to demonstrate the feasibility of sustainable WEEE recovery in the current context of developing countries.
WEECAM’s mission is to establish a replicable pilot program for the large-scale collection and processing of WEEE in Cameroon’s major urban areas, in partnership with public authorities, economic stakeholders, civil society organizations, and workers in the informal sector, with the goal of collecting and recycling 10,000 metric tons of WEEE over a five-year period.
The FFEM invites you to vote for its WEECAM Project on the Convergences website before May 23, 2018—Vote online!
