Taking a closer look to guide action

A multi-purpose approach: accountability, knowledge enhancement and decision support
Capitalization at the FFEM: a strengthened process
Capitalization at the FFEM aims to generate knowledge useful for operational, scientific, and policy action, particularly when thematic portfolios reach maturity or when major technical issues emerge. The FFEM may also initiate targeted capitalisation efforts on high-impact themes, in response to current events.
By comparing the experiences of several projects around a common topic, these exercises help to compare approaches, strengthen links between actors from different geographical contexts, and better understand the conditions for success and failure. Recommendations are made at the end of the process to enable the sharing of lessons learned across projects. This helps to identify transferable solutions and inform discussions on scaling up.
Capitalization efforts also build connections between actors from different regions facing similar challenges, fostering the creation of genuine communities of practice and knowledge. Often conducted in partnership with other institutions, they systematically lead to feedback sessions and exchanges with development practitioners, helping to stimulate discussion and more broadly disseminate the findings.
Advocacy on an international scale
Capitalization efforts are intended to serve as a strategic resource for political decision-makers and technical and financial partners. They can generate significant leverage effects and lead to lasting changes in national policies and international practices. Their implementation often aligns with key moments on the international agenda, further enhancing their impact.

The IN FOCUS collection
Capitalization exercises at the FFEM have taken various forms over time and in 2023 led to the creation of the “Cap’ Sur” collection, developed by the FFEM to share solutions and trigger large-scale transitions. Through the publication of in-depth reports, policy briefs, and short films for a wider audience, it offers an original platform for the voices of the project leaders we support.
Thematic capitalizations
BIODIVERSITY
In 2021, the FFEM published a capitalization report titled “25 Years of Experience and Nearly 40 Projects” on marine protected areas, which contributed to the discussions at the 2021 International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Congress and IMPAC V.

Focus on the Mangroves Initiative
Launched in 2018, the Mangroves Initiative aims to develop exchanges of experience between mangrove coastal protection and regeneration projects, build scientific and technological knowledge, and capitalise on and promote their achievements. Its collaborative platform is a key tool for building bridges between experts and researchers from different continents in Latin America, Africa and Asia, promoting exchanges and disseminating progress throughout the implementation of projects.
