20 years capitalization: the Small Initiatives Programme (SIP) 2006–2025 © IUCN

For the past 20 years, the Small Initiatives Programme (SIP) has been supporting civil society organisations in West and Central Africa that are committed to preserving biodiversity and sustainably improving the living conditions of local communities. Launched by the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) and implemented by the French Committee of the IUCN, this pioneering programme has supported 326 projects in 28 countries, led by 214 grassroots organisations. This report looks back on ten years of actions and lessons learned that illustrate the capacity of local actors to innovate, act collectively and strengthen the resilience of territories in the face of environmental and climate challenges.

The Small Initiatives Programme (SIP) supports the emergence of an African civil society capable of innovating and taking sustainable action for nature and territories. Despite sometimes fragile contexts, the organisations supported demonstrate strong resilience and deliver concrete results in terms of biodiversity, local governance and economic development. Through feedback, testimonials and analyses, this publication puts into perspective the lessons learned from a programme that has become a benchmark in supporting local environmental actors.
