Publication of a Guide on Coral Reefs
Published on
The current ecological crisis, marked by significant degradation of ecosystems in a context of global change, calls for stronger and more sustainable protection of coral reefs and mangroves—hotspots of global biodiversity. To rise to these challenges, public policies alone can no longer be the only actors implementing such efforts. A global mobilization, including citizen involvement in daily practices, will make a difference. Today, it is essential for youth to become engaged and acquire the necessary skills to take action for the survival of these vital ecosystems.
This new publication, "Corals, Reef Builders", provides an overview of current knowledge about these ecosystems and addresses the threats and pressures they are facing. The final section highlights the wide range of professions and skills required to ensure their survival and protection. Far from being exhaustive, the guide is intended to serve as a source of inspiration for students and young professionals. In the face of coming challenges, new careers may emerge from existing skills and expertise; future generations will need to demonstrate agility to accompany these changes.
This guide was produced by the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) and Océanopolis, with support from the Ministry for Ecological Transition, as part of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
