Launch of the Oceanic Plankton, Climate and Development project: encourage the sharing of scientific knowledgenaissances scientifiques
Published on

The Oceanic Plankton, Climate and Development project is launched today in Argentina, with FFEM and TARA Expeditions sharing a common vision: that of the urgency to protect the high seas and lead to global ocean governance. The project must contribute to better ocean management by contributing to the TARA OCEANS scientific program which promotes the development of models and indicators for the observation of marine biodiversity based on the planktonic system.
This programme will be carried out by developing an international research partnership with the participation of at least six countries of the South and by forging links with international institutions and communities of decision-makers.
Strengthen scientific expertise on plankton
The added value and innovation of the project lies in the fact that no marine ecosystem observation program has such extensive models and data to take planktonic systems into account.
The four components of the project:
- Science: Contribute to the strengthening of the research activity of the TARA OCEANS consortium as a complement to the OCEANOMICS project and launch the process of creating new models and indicators based on plankton observation and its correlations with marine ecosystems.
- Capacity building: Develop an international program for structuring research on oceanic life based on the experience of TARA OCEANS while involving Southern countries in order to advance intervention capacities in this field.
- Governance: Promote scientific results to multilateral institutions in the ongoing ocean governance processes within the UN: CBD, UNFCCC, DOALOS, and the Nairobi, Nouméa, and Abidjan Conventions.
- Awareness: Raise awareness and disseminate information to local decision-makers, NGOs and young people on the importance of marine ecosystems, especially in areas beyond national jurisdiction, in connection with TARA expeditions.
This project aims to contribute to strengthening scientific expertise on plankton in developing countries. The set of results and shared knowledge will allow these countries to contribute to the negotiations debates on ocean governance, relying on national scientific experts.
