Innovating together: the strength of FFEM’s cooperation, builder of bridges between the South and the North

On this United Nations Day for South-South cooperation, spotlight on initiatives that, thanks to local know-how and the sharing of experiences between countries in the South, bring forth solutions adapted to the realities on the ground, while benefiting from triangular support from the South.South-North when it reinforces its impact and sustainability.
Fostering South-South and triangular cooperation
South-South cooperation is a key driver of environmental innovation. By facilitating exchanges between countries facing similar challenges, FFEM and its partners contribute to the implementation of solutions adapted to the local context while generating global impacts. South-South-North triangular cooperation, on the other hand, makes it possible to combine technical expertise, financing and know-how from countries of the North with initiatives led by the South, thus creating lasting and effective synergies.

Concrete projects that make a difference
- Launched in 2018, the FFEM, through the Mangroves initiative, supports pilot projects in countries such as Costa Rica, Benin, Senegal and Guinea, by focusing on the resilience of coastal communities in the face of climate change while contributing to biodiversity conservation. This unique initiative aims to develop South-South cooperation by allowing countries of the South to share their knowledge and practices in sustainable mangrove management while benefiting from complementary technical and scientific support from partners from the North.

- The BRIDGE project carried out by the FFEM in partnership with the RedLAC networks (Latin America and the Caribbean) and CAFÉ (Africa), aims to mobilize the private sector in favor of biodiversity conservation through innovative financial mechanisms managed by Trust Funds for Conservation (FFCs). The project brings together actors from Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa who share their experiences and mutually enrich each other with solutions adapted to their contexts. The communities of practice created promote collective learning, mentoring and the dissemination of good practices between countries in the South. The FFEM, alongside other international partners, provides financial, technical and methodological support. This link with the countries of the North makes it possible to consolidate innovations from the field and accelerate their dissemination, while attracting new private funding for conservation.
Capitalize and share to inspire
In addition to operational projects, the FFEM also produces capitalization works that synthesize lessons learned and recommendations from clusters of projects. These publications are intended to be useful resources for a wide range of actors in the South, whether they are public decision-makers, civil society organizations or private actors, thus promoting the dissemination of good practices and the implementation of sustainable environmental solutions on a large scale.
On this World South-South Cooperation Day, it is important to recall that the future of environmental protection and living things depends on knowledge sharing and collaborative innovation. Supporting South-South and South-South-North cooperation strengthens the capacity of countries to respond to environmental challenges while building inclusive and shared sustainable development.
