Women and Biodiversity: When Economic Inclusion Meets Forest Conservation in Cameroon

Nebeday rencontre PPI 20 ans
Since its creation, the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) has been supporting projects that reconcile environmental protection with reducing inequalities, ensuring the inclusion of women in economic circuits and decision-making bodies. This approach guarantees, from the earliest stages, sustainable initiatives that can scale up for both sustainable and inclusive development. The FFEM thus contributes to international efforts for gender equality and women's empowerment worldwide, goals that are enshrined in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, which we celebrate this year on its 30th anniversary.

FFEM Insights: Xavier Debade, expert in ecosystem restoration and sustainable forest management

Projet Macizo
To better understand the work of the FFEM, we invite you to meet Xavier Debade, who joined FFEM in July 2023 as a project manager focusing on forest conservation and ecosystem restoration. As the largest reservoir of terrestrial biodiversity, forests play a crucial role in climate regulation.

With his expertise, Xavier helps advance one of FFEM’s key priorities: in line with France’s international commitments, we aim to support zero-deforestation initiatives, the development of land, soil, and forest restoration models, and the production of data on the performance of agroecological, agroforestry, and forestry systems.

World Day of Social Justice: a look back at the Union Natural project in Colombia's Pacific region

Photo de groupe Union Natural 2024
On the occasion of World Day of Social Justice, we would like to share one of the flagship projects supported by the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM). Since 2018, the FFEM has been supporting the socio-economic development of Colombia’s Pacific region through the Unión Natural project—an ambitious initiative that aims to preserve forest ecosystems and combat deforestation while improving the living conditions of local communities. During our teams' visit in 2024, major advances in terms of community inclusion and the resonance of the innovative model were shared.

Small-Scale Initiatives Program : 20 years of Local Actions supported by the FFEM to help preserve African biodiversity

Groupe Nebeday photo
From February 2 to 7, the Forum celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Small Initiatives Program (PPI) marked two decades of concrete actions and exemplary commitments to the preservation of African biodiversity. Led by the French Global Environment Facility (FFEM) and the French Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), this program supports African Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in their efforts to preserve a unique natural heritage and promote sustainable local development across the continent.

For the past 19 years, the FFEM has been working alongside local actors: with a total co-financing of €17 million, it has supported 214 African CSOs in implementing 305 biodiversity protection projects across 28 African countries.

World Wetlands Day: A Look Back at Biodiversity Protection in the Mediterranean Region

Alliance méditerranéenne des zones humides
Every year, World Wetlands Day is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of these ecosystems (marshes, wet meadows, mangroves…), which are essential for maintaining natural balance and play a significant role in reducing the impact of climate change. They serve, for example, as natural barriers against coastal erosion, storms, and floods.

In its efforts to support wetlands, the FFEM incorporates Nature-Based Solutions (NbS), which rely on the use of these ecosystems and their services to address environmental and socio-economic challenges.

THE FFEM SUPPORTS INNOVATION FOR A FAIR AND SUSTAINABLE ENERGY TRANSITION

ZEMBO parking
Aware that the adoption of clean energy is an integral part of the fight against climate change, one of the priorities of the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) is to contribute to energy efficiency and a fair and sustainable transition.
On the occasion of the International Clean Energy Day, let us focus on the ZEMBO project, launched in Kampala in 2019 with the support of the FFEM, aimed at advancing Uganda’s energy transition through the transport sector.

COP CLIMATE 29 : UNITING CLIMATE AND BIODIVERSITY FOR AN INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE TRANSITION

Mangrove _ Indonésie
COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024, focuses on climate finance to drive ambitious climate action. The main goal is to establish a new global objective for funding climate efforts in developing countries. This includes operationalizing the Loss and Damage Fund and clarifying carbon market mechanisms to keep climate ambitions aligned with the stakes, thanks to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, equitable transitions to clean energy, and adaptation measures to mitigate the risk of losses and damages. Achieving this can only happen through the involvement of all actors, from governments to their populations.

Supporting community conservation to reconcile local development and biodiversity conservation in northern Kenya

zebres -Kenya © Lisa Verpeaux
Hailed as one of the most mega-biodiverse nations in East Africa, Kenya is home to over 6,500 plant species along with over 1,000 birds and about 350 mammals. Despite its rich biodiversity, many of Kenya’s iconic species are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and fragmentation. On the occasion of the International Endangered Species Day, we are spotlighting the project “Connectivity North” co-funded by the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) and the French Development Agency (AFD) to support community conservation activities in northern Kenya.

After 6 years of partnership, the participative governance of Mediterranean MPAs shows promising results

COGITO final event
The Mediterranean basin is today considered a global biodiversity hotspot. Its exceptional flora includes some 15,000-25,000 species, 60% of which are endemic to the region. However, over-fishing, coastal development and the impacts of climate change have all put this ecosystem under increasing strain, resulting in the Mediterranean being one of the most threatened marine regions in the world. For years, safeguarding the Mediterranean has relied on regional cooperation, cemented through the COGITO project. As part of the 16th edition of the Regional experience-sharing workshop organised by MedPAN, one of the COGITO project sponsors, the FFEM took part in the project’s final event, held on 15 - 19 April 2024 in La Londe-les-Maures.

Innovation at the heart of solutions to reconcile forest and humanity

Homme et Forêt
First reservoir of terrestrial biodiversity, forests are, along with land, a formidable lever for climate regulation. Deforestation from agriculture causes nearly a quarter of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions and an accelerated loss of biodiversity. The FFEM addresses together the forest and agricultural territories, intimately linked. For 30 years, the FFEM has supported innovative solutions with 105 projects financed on forests and agricultural land and an amount of €144 million committed.
