COP CLIMATE 29 : UNITING CLIMATE AND BIODIVERSITY FOR AN INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE TRANSITION

COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024, focuses on climate finance to drive ambitious climate action. The main goal is to establish a new global objective for funding climate efforts in developing countries. This includes operationalizing the Loss and Damage Fund and clarifying carbon market mechanisms to keep climate ambitions aligned with the stakes, thanks to a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, equitable transitions to clean energy, and adaptation measures to mitigate the risk of losses and damages. Achieving this can only happen through the involvement of all actors, from governments to their populations.

ISSUES FOR COP16 IN CALI AND THEIR LINKS TO THE FFEM STRATEGY: CONVERGING TOWARDS A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

From 21 October to 1 November 2024, Colombia will be hosting the sixteenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16), in the city of Cali. The parties will be meeting for the first time since the Kunming-Montreal Agreement of 2022 with its ambitious targets for protecting biodiversity. This conference will be an opportunity to assess progress on implementing the Global Biodiversity Framework. In response to the urgency of the triple planetary crisis, the FFEM is supporting groundbreaking initiatives that address biodiversity, climate and pollution issues while engaging local communities and promoting innovative finance. The FFEM is thus contributing towards several targets in the Global Biodiversity Framework.

On August 9th, for International Day of the World4s Indigenous Peoples, the French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) Highlights a project supported by the French Ministry of the Economy, Finance and Industrial and Digital Sovereignty, in partnership with the NGO Conservation International. The project aims to ensure the long-term preservation of the Amazon rainforest, vital for global climate stability and the livelihoods of Indigenous peoples and local communities.
